Tawau player denies KK team clean sweep in squash tourney
KOTA KINABALU: Tawau’s Mohd Akid Izuddin Zulkifli denied Kota Kinabalu from making a clean sweep at the just concluded 2019 Sabah Inter-District Squash Tournament held over the weekend at the Likas squash courts.

The hosts took home seven out of eight titles available and was only denied by Akid who upset Euven Liaw in the final of the boys Under-17 category.

In a pulsating match, the second seed pulled out all the stops to beat Euven in five tough sets 11-8, 11-8, 8-11, 9-11, 12-6 to take the title.

His teammate Syafiq Asyari also won his play-off match to take the third spot with a 11-5, 7-11, 11-9, 10-12, 11-8 victory over Fernando Richard of Kota Kinabalu.

The girls Under-17 title won by top seed, Etain Tay who was forced to dig deep before overcoming the strong challenge from the much younger second seed Doyce Lee, in a thrilling five sets 11-5, 7-11, 11-9, 10-12, 11-8, with third place going to Rachel Richard also from Kota Kinabalu.

Kota Kinabalu dominated the boys Under-13 category by taking the top four places with second seed Clement Richard taking the title following a five sets 9-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-13, 11-7 win over third seed Jedidiah Kwan, who had earlier upset top seed Jeremy Wong in the semi-final while Clement defeated Gary Fitzgerald, who then went on to beat Jeremy in the play off.

In the girls Under-13 category, Euodia Lai lived up to her top billing to defeat Amber Kristy Muyou, who was the national girls Under- 9 champion in the CIMB foundation national circuit in Bukit Jalil last month, with third place going to Velcy Veon.

Issac Alfred was the surprise winner in the boys Under-11 category where the fourth  seed  who had earlier upset top seed Eugene Lee in the semi-final continued his winning form by beating third seed Alfie Ridzqi to take the title, while Eugene had to settle for third.

In the girls Under-11 category, Clarabelle Funk  emerged champion in a round robin format followed by Cahya Dynara and Branice Chin, all of Kota Kinabalu.

The boys Under-9, which had the most participants with 19 entries saw top seed Oswald Wong taking the title followed by Ean Lee, and Liew Toh Wen while the top three places in the girls category went to Marion Jesse followed by Francine Ava and Sarah Syahirah.

A total of 88  players participated in the event  with President of Sabah Squash Association Datuk Charles O Pang gracing the closing ceremony where he praised the players for their improved performance as they prepare for national tournaments next year, and to the organising committee for the success.

He also expressed his gratitude to Youth and Sports Ministry and the Sabah Sports Council for their support. Also present were all the committees from Sabah Squash Association and Kota Kinabalu Squash Association.
