‘Keningau silat duo can win SEA Games gold’

KENINGAU: Keningau Silat Association Chairman, Yahya Ramli is optimistic that two silat athletes from the association representing Malaysia at the ongoing SEA Games in the Philippines will help the country bring home two gold medals.

He said this was based on the performance of the two athletes, Luqman Laji and Nur Syazerra Hidayah in the State, National and International Silat Championships they had participated in.

“I am optimistic that these two athletes will bring home two gold medals for the country,” he told Daily Express here on Monday.

Yahya said the silat competition had started today (Monday) where Luqman along with the country’s other silat athletes will be competing.

He said Luqman, 24, is to take part in the male single artistic event while Nur Syazerra Hidayah, 21, will compete in the female class B event.

According to him, the two athletes left for Manila on November 30 along with other Malaysian contingent athletes.

“Two gold medals have been the target of this association as they are ready and eager to win the event they are participated,” he said.

Yahya said Luqman’s best achievements was winning gold at the VI Sabah Games (Saga VI) in Kota Kinabalu (2013), fourth place at the XVII Malaysian Games (Sukma XVII) in Perlis (2014), gold in BIMP EAGA Friendship Games (2014), silver in  Sukma XVIII in Sarawak (2016), gold and silver in IPT-DRB Hicom and National Open Silat Championship in Pahang (2016).

He said, Luqman also won a silver in the Deputy Prime Minister Cup Silat Championship in Johor (2016), in fifth ranking in BIMP- EAGA Friendship Games in Indonesia (2016), won gold and bronze in the 8th Open UPSI Silat International Championship in Perak (2017), won two golds in Deputy Prime Minister Cup Silat Championship in Johor (2017), two golds in the 9th Open UPSI Silat International Championship in Perak (2018).

“Luqman also won two gold medals and best male athlete at the Ministry of Higher Education International Silat Championship in Johor (2019).

“He also represented Malaysia at the 18th World Silat Championship in Singapore 2018 and placed fifth in the men’s individual, representing Malaysia in the Open Belgium Pencak Silat International, Antwerp Belgium 2019 and won the bronze medal in male individual and won the Male Individual gold medal at the Malaysia Open Silat International Championship in 2019,” he said.

He said Nur Syazerra Hidayah’s achievements were silver medal at the Sabah Games in Tawau (2015), gold in Saga in 2017, gold in Sukma in 2018 and bronze in National Championship in 2019.

Luqman and Nur Syazerra Hidayah are from Kampung Tudan Baru and Kampung Pamalan Keningau.
