Concern abound over two Penampang incidents involving kids
Kota Kinabalu: Community safety should be given priority in Penampang, especially in areas involving construction.

The advice came from Minister of International Trade and Industry cum Penampang MP, Datuk Darell Leiking, following two recent incidents in the district. On Sunday, a toddler fell to her death from five floors in a building in Bundusan. The girl fell from a link-bridge that had a 1ft x 1ft gap at the far end (pictured, left). See video below.

During a survey on the premises, his Political Secretary Pritchard Gumbaris was informed by the building manager that there was no notice of obstruction to prevent anyone from entering the area. Also at the premises to conduct survey were officers from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh) and the building manager. In the second incident, firefighters had to be called in when a child got her foot stuck in a drain cover (pictured, right) as shown in the video below.

“The District Council should take immediate action to ensure that the drain is not harmful to the community. I have contacted the District Council engineer and immediate action will be taken to close the gaps that may be harmful,” said Gumbaris. Leiking warned contractors to comply with safety measures not only for their workers but also the community. He called on the local government to constantly monitor not only works done in Penampang area but across the State to ensure safety of the community is prioritised.
