Gift by Sabah’s Chinese community is restored

Kota Kinabalu: The run-down Malaysia Monument 1963 at Lintas Deasoka here has now come to life again, featuring a functional fountain with coloured lights and music, after restoration works.

Api Api Assemblywoman Datuk Christina Liew visited the historical site that has been given a face-lift for preservation, using her Assemblywoman’s Fund, Monday.

The missing commemorative plaque with its original wordings (in English and Chinese) has also been reinstated. It reads: “Sponsored By North Borneo Chinese Association & Jesselton Chinese Chamber of Commerce. This Monument Is Built By The People Of Jesselton To The Founding of Malaysia on 16th September 1963.”

Then Head of State (the late) Datu Mustapha Datu Harun (who later became Sabah’s third Chief Minister) unveiled the plaque on September 16th, 1963 to mark the formation of Malaysia.

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government continued its momentum in managing the economy in line with the commitment and spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) when it posted record high state revenue of RM6.973 billion last year.

“The monument that was exposed to wear and tear for the last 56 years, was actually restored on time for the Malaysia Day celebration this year. It is a piece of history for us, Sabahans. “It serves to remind us of how Sabah gained independence from the British by joining Malaya and Sarawak to form the Federation of Malaysia,” said Liew who is also Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment. Tourists and locals alike are attracted to the place as they are seen stopping by and taking pictures, she noted.

Earlier, the Api Api Assemblywoman, who was accompanied by Mayor Datuk Nordin Siman, checked out the condition of the upgraded bus-stop (behind the former State Library building), one of five in that part of the city that are lit up at night for security, using solar energy.

They later walked through the Taman Pocket marked by greenery (behind the former State Library building) which has been enhanced, leading to Lintas Deasoka.

Liew was also briefed on the progress of the ongoing city beautification progamme that includes re-paving broken traffic islands such as the one adjacent to Hilton Hotel, and improving pedestrian walkways in other areas. Also present were Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) Director-General, Noorliza Awang Alip, Director of Valuation Department, Lifred Wong, Director of Landscape Department, Robert Lipon, Director of Transport and Traffic Department, Calvin Liaw, Director of Public Relations and Complaints Department, Lizawana Matin and Api Api Community Development Leader, Grace Lee.
