Motorists risk fine when parking in this KK lay-by

MOTORISTS will be penalised for occupying the reserved-space or lay-by for public buses to stop temporarily next to Wisma Intiutama at Jalan KK Bypass, in the city.A concerned bus driver approached Hotline recently to voice out his concerns about the rampant use of the space by motorists to park their vehicle to avoid paying parking fee. “We all know that the designated parking spaces in this part of the city are limited but they should not resort to leaving their car at the bus stop because it will prevent us from dropping or fetching passengers there. “There are many occasions where we (bus drivers) had been honked by those following behind for stopping on the slow-lane as we were blocking the traffic flow,” said ZAABA, who spoke on behalf of his fellow bus drivers. In some occasions, he lamented that he was scolded by motorists for causing obstruction on the main road concerned. “We have no other choice but to drop passengers or fetching them after stopping on the slow lane even though when traffic are heavy, especially during lunch time’s peak hours.

“We can’t do that at anywhere else along that stretch as it is not safe for our passengers to walk at that area.

“The congestion caused by us can only be avoided had the lay-by is left vacant all the time,” he said. He urged the traffic police and City Hall’s enforcement division to take note of the matter and to monitor such goings-on there regularly. “Hopefully this can be solved soon as possible,” he added. A City Traffic Police spokesman, when contacted recently, said such offence is stipulated under Section 48 of the Road Transport Act 1987. “Motorists who are misusing the reserved spot as parking space can be fined up to RM100,” he added.

He assured that its personnel would be reminded to monitor the area from time to time. A City Hall spokesman said its personnel would keeping an eye on such matter there as well. “We will instruct the driver, if he or she is in the vicinity, to vacate the space immediately but we won’t hesitate to tuck a compound ticket on the car windscreen if the driver is not around during our inspection,” he added.
