LABUAN: The new resettlement project for fishermen costing RM17 million in Kg Belukut, here, will commence next year, said Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) Chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil.

He said the project on a four-hectare of government land is able to accommodate 120 single-storey houses for the fishermen.

“The allocation for the fishermen’s resettlement (only for fishermen who do not own land) is capable of providing the infrastructure facilities, a community hall, sports facilities and related amenities, thus giving the fishing community a better quality of life,” he said after the handing over LKIM financial aids to fishermen affected by the natural disaster here.

Faiz said a total of RM2.2 million had been spent since 2012 for the fishermen housing repair projects in Labuan.

“The projects were co-ordinated by the Parliamentary Agriculture Development Council (MPPP) and Labuan Fishermen Association,” he said.

Earlier, he visited 13 units of new housing projects each cost at some RM68,000 under the LKIM project (fishermen special housing project programme [program projek khas perumahan nelayan (PKPN)] LKIM) at Kg Bebuloh and Kg Lubok Temiang.

“The total cost of the 13 houses is RM848,000...we are doing our part to help improve the living standards of the fishermen…as five houses have been completed and three are still under construction, while five more will be constructed in 2020,” he said.

He also disclosed the RM20 million second phase project of the Kiamsam LKIM Complex project, which commenced since February this year is scheduled for completion end of next year.

The project includes for the provision of additional landing facilities through the construction and upgrading work at the complex including staff quarters and jetties to meet the needs of fishing entrepreneurs.

To date, a total of RM31, 850 had been approved for 10 applications under the LKIM natural disaster financial aid.
