Kota Kinabalu: Three illegal immigrants involved in drugs and making homemade firearms were killed in a shootout with police during an integrated “Ops Laras” in Kinabatangan on Thursday.

State Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Zaini Jass said the operation was held in two different locations simultaneously at 2.30am involving 80 officers and personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ), special branch and Tiger Platoon from the General Operations Force (PGA).

A family of seven, including five children, all without valid identification, were arrested during the raid at the first targeted location.

“Upon further investigation, the team discovered a packet of Syabu weighing 1.35g, two air rifles, a machete, several bullets, 13 marbles and 13 mobile phones, among others.

“During the 3.30am search, a motorcycle was heard coming towards the house and a team of police introduced themselves causing the suspect to flee to nearby bushes.

“The suspect then fired a shot during the police chase prompting police to fire back that left the suspect dead,” he told a press conference at the Sabah Police Contingent (IPK), Friday.

Zaini said upon further inspection, the team discovered a black homemade gun with a chambered 12-bore cartridge, six 12-bore live rounds and 13 packets containing substances believed to be Syabu.

Meanwhile, a second Tiger Platoon team raided three other houses belonging to suspects who owned firearms and involved in drug trafficking activities 2.4km away.

“Two suspects who were aware of the security forces presence fired several shots causing the security forces to reciprocate. Both suspects were killed in the exchange,” he said.

Zaini said the team found a Smith and Wesson revolver and another homemade pistol resembling a revolver. Also seized along with the two suspects was 700 in Philippine pesos, RM2,376, one Brunei Dollar and nine packs of transparent plastics suspected to be syabu weighing 800 grams worth about RM150,000 ,” he said.

Among other items seized were two air riffles, three home-made air rifles, a few gun components, a scope, a sword, a machete, a tactical pouch and various bullets.

“A family of four including a boy and a baby, all without identification documents were arrested in the second house, while the third house was empty,” he said, adding that all three houses were about 50 metres apart.

All cases are being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code, Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalty) Act 1971, Section 6 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (DDA).
