Kota Kinabalu: Four major drug syndicates in the State have been eliminated through various police operations, Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) Director Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd revealed, Friday.

He said their effort in Sabah is extremely challenging when geographical and social factors are taken into consideration.

“Many types of terrain and areas such as water settlements are among the many challenges we have to face especially during raids. Police are still trying to carry out their duties and so far four major drug syndicates in Sabah have been eliminated out of 37 nationwide.

“To date, there is no information on the use of laboratories for drug processing in Sabah, but we have already busted 17 in Peninsular Malaysia,” he said.

Mohd Khalil said most of the drugs that were brought into Sabah were via ferries, courier and airports.

“It has now becoming more challenging for us especially with courier and it has been proven with the recent arrests of an individual who brought drugs in through courier service,” he said.

Meanwhile, 10 individuals aged between 18 and 56 were detained for various drug offences during an “Ops Ice Breaker” operation in Kg Likas on Thursday.

The seven-hour operation which started at 11am was focused at the area which has been identified as a hot spot for drug activities. Mohd Khalil said the special operation was carried out with 12 officers and 136 personnel involving various PDRM departments.

He said 101 individuals, including three women, were detained for urine screening tests.

“Of this, one was detained under Section 39A(1), nine were detained under Section 15(1)(c) and another under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said. Mohd Khalil said police also seized 9.60gm Syabu worth RM1,440. He said cases were investigated under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (ADB) 1952, Section 12 (2) and Section 15 (1) (a) of the same act.

Accordingly, Mohd Khalil said similar operations would be held from time to time in an effort to curb drug activities.

He urged the public to channel information related to drug activities to the police.
