Association hails Poison Act amendment bill tabling postponement
Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has welcomed the government’s decision to postpone tabling of the second reading of Poisons (Amendment) Bill 2019.

“The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) welcomes the decision by the Health Ministry to postpone the second reading of the Poisons (Amendment) 2019 Bill to the next Parliament session, which convenes in March 2020,” said MMA President Dr N. Ganabaskaran.

He said the association was also pleased to hear of Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad’s plans to engage with stakeholders and its looks forward to the discussions.

Dr Dzulkefly said that the second and third readings of the Poisons (Amendment) Bill 2019 scheduled today, were postponed to the next session of the lower house of Parliament.

Proposed for the postponement through the Standing Order 62, he said the bill was expected to be debated at the Dewan Rakyat sitting in March next year.

At a press conference later, Dr Dzulkefly said the postponement of the readings was to collect opinions from the relevant stakeholders.

“It is for me to get opinions from the relevant and important stakeholders so that we can achieve the consensus and carry the bill out smoothly.

“Hence, I will call for another session to discuss on the matter with them in a time and date that I will announce soon,” he said.

Amendments to the bill received mix reactions from MMA which described the proposals in the bill which could allow doctors to be punished and imprisoned for not providing prescriptions to patients as requested, as irrelevant. - NST
