Malaysia still a regional gymnastics powerhouse

Kota Kinabalu: National gymnastics team manager Liew Tong Ee was happy the artistic gymnasts managed to exceed their three-gold medal target set at the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines.

The contingent returned with five golds, one silver and three bronzes with Tokyo Olympics bound Farah Ann Abdul Hadi contributing the most with three golds, while the other two golds were from Tan Fu Jie and Tracie Ang.

The sole silver medal was delivered by Tan Ing Yueh with bronzes won by Zul Bahrin Mat Asri, Tan Ing Yueh and  Rachel Yeoh Li Wens.

“We were also the overall champions in the event with the five golds followed by Vietnam who won three golds followed by Philippines and Indonesia who won two golds each, while Singapore and Cambodia failed to win any golds.

“It showed that we are still the powerhouse in the region, and I hope we can maintain the status in the next SEA Games in Vietnam,” he said.

He added that the competition was held smoothly with good arrangement on food, transportation and the hosts had been very helpful.

“We also had the presence of Malaysia Gymnastics Federation President Rachel Lau and the secretary Jimmy Tan who came to support the athletes.”

He also expressed his thanks to the Olympics Council of Malaysia, National Sports Institute, Youth and Sports Ministry, the National and Sabah Sports Council as well as national and state gymnastics associations for their support.
