Shoplifting: Man gets 13 months
Kota Kinabalu: A 23-year-old man was jailed 13 months by the Magistrate’s Court, Friday, for shoplifting.

Hendra Jonny pleaded guilty to stealing two boxes of perfume, one unit of bedsheet and one knapsack all worth RM98.43 at the Mr DIY shop in Wawasan Plaza.

Magistrate Afiq Agoes was informed by the prosecution that Hendra was seen by the shop’s worker behaving in a suspicious manner while in the premises.

A check of his knapsack found all the said items. Hendra was subsequently  handed over to the police.

He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and liability of a fine, upon conviction.

In another case, a 25-year-old man was fined RM100 or three days jail for fraudulently having RM3,700 in his bank account.

Tan Yue Qing admitted before magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to having the money on Aug 22, which he failed to give satisfactorily explanation on how he obtained them. He had committed an offence under Section 22A (1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance which provides for a fine of up to RM100 or up to three months jail or both, upon conviction.

Meanwhile, 14 people were penalised for committing drug-related offences.

Eleven of them – Nordin Hassan, Yee Fooh Yen, Azdi Rashid, Md Rajan Basit, Handdley Pungawon, Jaedin Kimsain, Said Lauhari, Azmi Ghani, Juain Sulidin, Norimah Munob and Ikhram Sabdani pleaded guilty separately to taking syabu and amphetamine at separate locations here between Sept 28 and Oct 28.

Handdley was ordered to pay a fine of RM2,500 or eight months jail, Yee and Azdi were fined RM1,700 or eight months jail each, Nordin, Rajan and Jaedin were jailed eight months each while the rest were handed six months jail each.

The other three – Masadi Majinin, Pozek Siton and Mohammad Sukor admitted to having syabu.

Mohammad and Masadi were jailed 12 months and 11 months respectively while Pozek was fined RM1,900 or 11 months jail.

Taking syabu under Section 15(1) of the of the Dangerous Drugs Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail on conviction, while having syabu under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail or both, upon conviction.
