Another pygmy elephant found dead in Lahad Datu
LAHAD DATU: Elephant death toll in the State grew with another found dead in the Bakapit area, here, Monday.

District Wildlife Department officer Sylvester Saimin when contacted confirmed the discovery saying the carcass (pictured) was noticed by a plantation worker at around 6.30am.

"Upon receiving information, we (Wildlife Department) immediately dispatched officers to investigate and to conduct a post mortem," he said.

"I will share further information on the discovery of the dead elephant once the post mortem is complete."

Death of protected species is common in the State.

Among the most recent cases, the carcass of a pygmy elephant was found in Udin River, Kalabakan with 70 gunshot wounds on Sept 25.

On Oct 20, a rotten carcass was found at a farm in Beluran with six suspected poachers arrested to assist investigations in both cases.

The carcass of a pygmy elephant was found floating upstream of Kinabatangan River with its feet cut off on Nov 3.
