Penampang council takes steps to rectify drain grate problems
THE Penampang District Council (PDC) took immediate steps to improve the position of the iron grating panels for the drains in Donggongon town, after it was reported that the structure is unsafe for young pedestrians.

A short video was circulated on Facebook recently, showing a girl’s leg became tightly wedged in between the panel and the walkway. A lady, who was believed to be her mother was seen consoling the latter. It was not known as to how the girl was able to free her leg from that spot.

JANE, who alerted Hotline about the matter recently, said the relevant authority must rectify the position of the panels to prevent a repeat of such unfortunate incident.

“I have noticed this danger for a long time already but I don’t know which authority to report to,” she added.

She said the matter should not be taken lightly by its caretaker because it may cause serious leg injury to anyone who are walking along that walkway.

“They should also ensure the position of the whole set of panel along that stretch of walkway to be modified soon as possible.

“I think they should examine the rest of the drain gratings on the public walkway in town as well,” she added.

Meanwhile, she also pointed out about the impending danger awaiting for unsuspecting customers inside the market in town.

“I fear that someone may injure himself or herself after stepping into a hole on the iron grating panel for the drain there,” she said, who noticed rust had severely consumed many parts of the panels.

She hoped the rectification work will be carried out soon as possible as well.

“We have re-measured the gap between the panels and the floor recently and it will be alleviated according to its new measurement very soon,” a Council spokesman replied, when asked about the matter.

In the meantime, he advised members of the public to keep their distance from the area in question.

As for the rusty iron grating in the market, he said the matter would be checked soon as possible.

“Allow us to check how many of the panels there are affected so that we can arrange for a solution soon as possible,” he added.

Hotline would follow up on these two cases with the Council later. (OV)
