Keeping tabs on Bukit Padang track lights

City Hall is keeping an eye on the Bukit Padang jogging track to ensure that it is properly illuminated, after the lights in different sections broke down twice over a span of two weeks in November.
A spokeswoman for the agency said the contractor, tasked with maintaining the lights, had been asked to check on the condition of these facilities more frequently.

“We also enlisted the help of our staff who stay on the grounds. They have been asked to alert us should any of the lights fail,” she said.
She said the second outage was caused by a problem with the cable servicing the inoperative facilities.
“The contractor tested the mechanism inside the control panel at this part of the track and attended to the problem with the power lines to the individual lights.
“A skymaster was deployed to assist in these efforts.”

The spokeswoman said a problem with a timer was to blame for the earlier disruption in another part of the track.
A mechanism for the timer might have been damaged by a power surge, according to her.

“The faulty sensor was replaced and the timer was reset, shortly after we became aware of the problem.”
VIV of Kolombong said the sun still had set when she reached the track at 6.45pm.
“There were only several others jogging at the time but one could not make out how far away they were,” she said.
“Thankfully, my husband was with me, otherwise I would’ve been looking over my shoulder from time to time as I ran.”
She hoped the relevant authority would look into having the track properly illuminated for the benefit of those who wanted to go for a run after work.
KAVITA of Telipok voiced her concern about the safety hazards to joggers three weeks earlier.
“Many of those going for run turn back once they reach the unlit section of the track,” she said.
“The more courageous ones brave through the darkness.
