Keningau garbage-free drive

KENINGAU: Keningau District Council will enhance the public engagement programmeme for the local community with a Garbage Free Campaign in the town area, said Council Executive Officer, Mumin Amsah here.He said the council not only focused on enforcement such as imposing a compound but is urging the public to understand and participate in the cleanliness, cheerfulness and well-being of the town.ADVERTISEMENT
“This is one of the approaches that the District Council has planned to intensify next year’s public engagement programme,” he told reporters while participating in the Aerobic and Gotong-Royong Programme to clean up the township organised by the Keningau Area Neighborhood (KRT here on Monday.
The programme was officiated by Sabah National Unity and National Integration Department Director, Delin Liet Blaun.
Mumin said one of the major impacts obtained was public awareness from the local community on the importance of maintaining good hygiene and well-being not only from home and the village environment but extended to the town or city.
He said the target of the Council was to make Keningau as a town free without garbage and it has been a huge challenge but lately the support of this free garbage campaign from partners from state and Federal government agencies are very high.ADVERTISEMENT
“We hope that this campaign will continue not only through gotong-royong but also to foster a public engagement with the local authorities, especially the District Council,” he said.
Mumin said Sabah Ministry of Local Government and Housing would launch a major programme called Toward Green Local Authority and for the start it off, Nabawan District Council and Tongod District Council are made project pilots and be followed by all other local authorities.

He learned that Keningau District Council would be fully involved for this Green Local Authority which is very closely linked to the cleanliness, cheerfulness and well-being of the town.

On the development of the garbage-free campaign, Mumin acknowledged that it was positive and needed to be further enhanced through grassroots participation from the village with involvement and participation of the Village Community Management Council (MPKK) as well as grassroots leaders.
According to him, the free-garbage campaign has been implemented since 2013 and will continue next year.
