KOTA BELUD: More than 1,000 residents in two villages here court danger daily in using a pedestrian path as an alternative following two landslips which caused the road heading to the villages impassable on Dec 21.Incessant rain at 2.45pm at Kg Kiau Nulu and Kg Kiau Bersatu here have caused two landslips spanning over 30 metres at the location and closed the road heading to the two villages.ADVERTISEMENT
Kg Kiau Toburi headman, Liam Sumbin, said the absence of alternative routes following the 2015 earthquake led villagers to build the pedestrian path along a cliff to bypass the landslip areas.
“The villagers cleared the path, apart from putting ropes on the trees and building stairs from the ground to bypass the landslip areas.
“The villagers will then return using another vehicle to commute to the village or to Kota Belud, Ranau and Kota Kinabalu,” he said. Starting at the intersection of Tamparuli-Ranau, the path to the village takes about two kilometres.
Liam said this situation worries the villagers especially when there will be two weddings on Dec 27 and 28.ADVERTISEMENT
Meanwhile, Kota Belud Public Works Department assistant engineer Saidan Mindou said as soon as the department received the complaint from the villagers on Dec 21, the department with cooperation of a concessionaire company started work on the affected road.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

So far, efforts to clean up the road paths are still being conducted and the workers need to be careful due to inconsistent weather condition that may cause the incident to recur. – R. Gonzales
