KOTA BELUD: A 38-year-old man is believed to have been swept away by flood waters in Sungai Kadamaian at Kg Kaung Malaan, Kota Belud-Ranau, here, on Dec. 23.

His friend realised that Maxwel Jangkon was missing during heavy rain at 5pm before informing the villagers. The victim’s mother who does not wish to be known, when contacted, said the last time she saw Maxwel was in the morning before the whole family went to Kota Belud township to buy essential items. The victim was alone in the house.

“As soon as we reached home at about 6.30pm, we were informed by the victim’s friends who came to our house to inform about my missing son.

“I was informed that my son left the house with his friends but the activity that caused him to be swept away by the river was unknown,” she said.

According to her, the incident was reported to the police and the villagers also helped the Fire and Rescue Department personnel to look for the victim since Monday night.

Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Station head here, Muhammad Syazwan Latun, said they received a distress call at 10.17pm and rushed five personnel, a fire engine and two rescue boats to the scene.

So far, the search and rescue operation has not shown any lead and the operation was also assisted by Volunteers Firefighters Team, police and villagers.

Syazwan said the operation involved using boats along the Sungai Kadamaian, the Abai River estuary and the Tempasuk River estuary up to five kilometres.
