Kota Kinabalu: More people were brought to court to face charges under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 which was passed by the Parliament on July 10, 2017 to protect children from sexual abuse.

About 22 men were charged for committing sexual offences against minors and 13 were charged with rape. Many of the perpetrators were fathers, stepfathers and relatives.

Some of the accused had already sentenced by the court after they pleaded guilty and some of them are still waiting for their cases to be tried.

Another court story that made headlines was a security personnel for the Federal Special Task Force who was charged with raping a Filipina while she was detained at the Temporary Detention Centre in Papar.

Abd Kahar Liman, 33, was charged in Papar Sessions Court on March 20 and he pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.

Some 170 Chinese nationals were arrested in connection with a “Macau scam” syndicate but charged with committing immigration offences.

Some were fined RM4,000 or four months’ jail each for entering the State without documents and for those staying in the State after their passports were expired were fined RM10,000.

The Chinese nationals aged 17 and 33 came to the State as tourists and were arrested at two different locations in Lido-Avenue and D’ Junction, Penampang.

They were arrested during the two raids conducted by the police at the places after failing to produce their documents.

Some of the Chinese nationals were also arrested at 4.05pm on Nov 26 this year at the 1Borneo hypermal near here, by the Immigration Department team.
