Sabah first to place MACC officers in CM’s Dept
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has become the first State in the country to have two senior Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers placed in the Chief Minister’s Department.

State Secretary Datuk Safar Untong said the two officers – Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah Bee and Maysara @ Nur Faridah Mohamad - reported for duty at the Chief Minister’s Office and State Integrity Unit, respectively, on Thursday.

“The State Government through the State Cabinet meeting on Nov 27 last year, agreed to place MACC senior officers on a contract basis for three years,” he said after a meeting with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal at the State Administrative Centre, here, Thursday.

Safar said the stationing of the MACC officers showed the determination of the Chief Minister and MACC to support the Government’s desire to make Malaysia known for its integrity and not corruption.

Sabah MACC Director Karunanithy Y Subbiah said the initiative was one of the measures taken by the Commission to help the State Government improve its public offices.

“It is also to ensure there are elements of check-and-balance in the government administration.

“The officers will be on duty in the assigned offices for three years and then we will see their performance…it will depend on the State Government whether to continue their contract,” he said.

Mohd Fuad said among the emphasis of his scope of duties would be to promote good governance.

“Basically, what we are doing here is more on prevention and integrity enhancement, including awareness programmes and other related activities.”

Meanwhile, Karunanithy said Sabah MACC has opened an operations room to enable the public to share information or make complaints on any corrupt activity or abuse of power during the Kimanis parliamentary by-election process.

“The operations room will be functioning 24 hours with our officers placed to monitor the election, from nomination to the voting day,” he said.

He said Sabah MACC can be reached at 088-488381 for any complaint, sharing information or seeking advice.
