Man who went fishing in Ranau river feared drowned

RANAU: A 31-year-old who went fishing in a river here Sunday afternoon failed to return home and is feared drowned. Search and rescue efforts are underway.
Junaidi Jaukan, 31, from Kg Bitoon, Ranau, was said to have gone fishing at Sungai Kagibangan near his village but did not return home since.

Ranau Fire and Rescue Station Chief, Ridwan Mohd Taib, said the department received a distress call from a villager informing about the incident at 10.15am on Monday and a unit of rescuers rushed to the location some 56km away from the station.
“The victim went fishing alone to the river and the last time he was seen was about 3pm on Sunday. He was wearing a yellow T-shirt and blue jeans,” he said.

He said the rescue team with three personnel led by PBKII Mastin Suli, in a fire engine and utility vehicle, sought information at the scene from the victim’s mother, Justinah Yundung, and initiated a “surface search” operation.
“With the assistance of villagers, the search is still ongoing,” he said, adding that there was no sign of the missing as of press time.
