Pledge on Sandakan market woes
SANDAKAN: The clogged drainage problem at the public market here and other needs will be addressed accordingly, said State Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister-cum-Tanjung Papat Assemblyman, Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung.

He said this was also part of the government’s commitment during a visit by the Chief Minister last year who wanted the infrastructure in the market to remain in good shape during his visit to the market.

“Give us time to repair the damaged facilities in this market. It is also our promise to ensure that the traders and visitors in this market to have a good environment,” he told reporters during his visit to the market.

Also present was Sandakan Municipal Council, Wong Foo Tin.

The general market, which has been open since 2006, has a variety of vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, poultry, accessories, clothing and food in the two-storey building.

Wong suggested that an escalator be built in that market. However it is only a proposal and a suitability study needs to done first.

Wong is also hoping for a new route to be built in the market area to address traffic congestion around the market.

He added that repair work on clogged drainage at the market would be implemented accordingly.

On other development, Poon advised the public not to be easily deceived with news being spread on social media regarding polio and influenza A H1N1.

He said it is important for the people to consult with either him, State Health Director or the authorities to get the correct information so as to avoid fake news which can create panic among the public.

He said that scanners have been installed at the airports to detect the disease.

Nevertheless, he urged the public to go to the nearest health clinic, doctors or hospitals if they have any symptoms of polio and influenza A H1N1.

Earlier, Poon and Wong went around Sandakan and among the place they visited was an abandoned 12-storey building.

Wong hoped that the owners of the property would come forward and explain why the building has been abandoned.

He said that under Section 36 of the Land Ordinance, the government has the right to publicise any vacant land.

“We hope the owner(s) of the property will come and meet us at the Sandakan Municipal Council soon,” he said.
