Kota Kinabalu: It was a very positive first day trial for Sabah Football Association (Safa) in their  search for the State President and Youth Cup players at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex synthetic pitch on Friday.

Justin Ganai who headed the session was impressed with the quality shown by the attendees and reckoned it will a challenging task for them to name the final list.

“It is going to be a very fierce competition among the players. With only 25 instead of 30 players as in the past for each squad to be registered in the new season, it makes the task even more difficult for us.

“The players who came this morning were all very good especially those vying for the Under-19 places. As a result, we are having a headache to choose the right players, and hopefully, we can get the best for the State teams at the end of the session,” he said.

According to him, the last day of the trial is on Sunday evening but it may end by noon on the same day.

“The trial is scheduled to finish in the afternoon on Sunday, but if everything goes well, there is a strong possibility that we can get the final results in the morning, but if we can’t, then we will  continue until the afternoon session,” he added.

Some 160 players with 60 for the Under-21 and 100 for the Under-19 squad showed up for the trial although initially only about 100 were expected and each was given a slot to play in short matches to impress the coaches.

Meanwhile, Justin has been retained by the management as head coach for the Sabah Under-21 squad this season with Billyton Vun Kit Ming as his assistant.

The Under-19 squad’s head coach post went to Johnny Dominicus and his assistant will be Mohd Faisal Ahmad.

There was no change in the goalkeeping department with Dantey S Tipay and Jasrih Jabidin retaining their post in the Under-21 and Under-19 squad respectively while the fitness coaching job  for the much senior squad went to Handly Sekukut  and Awang Jasrie Awang Matusin  for the juniors.
