Libaran fishermen urged to intensify activities

SANDAKAN: Fishermen in Libaran are advised to intensify their fisheries-related activities.Upko Libaran divisional chief, Dr Peter Jr Naintin said this was not only for their own needs but also to open more opportunities for the fishermen to become entrepreneurs such as producers of seafood products.

He said Upko Libaran committee would be working closely with the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), Sandakan branch to hold briefings and courses for fishermen and to identify areas suitable for the proposed Fisheries Processing Centre (PPHP) site.
“This is to help fishermen become successful entrepreneurs,” he said at the presentation of Fishermen’s Boat Licence for Kg Padas, Kg Sg Daling, Kg Luboh and Kg Sebait and surrounding areas recently.
Also present was Chairman of the Libaran Fishermen’s Association (Pelibar), Said Pimping and Upko Kg Padas Polling District (PDM) chief, Roslan Mahalan.
Dr Peter expressed hope that the fishermen who received the boat license would also obtain their fishing license soon.

With the licences, fishermen are entitled to various government subsidies such as Fisherman’s Aid Scheme, oil subsidy, living allowances, monthly incentives and home improvement aid, among others.
On Oct 26, last year, 54 boats were inspected by Sabah Ports and Wharf Department (JPDS) for licensing at Kg Sg Daling/Kg Luboh with the co-operation of agencies such as LKIM, Marine Department and Fisheries Department.
