KOTA KINABALU: The number of players vying for spots in the State President and Youth Cup teams this season has been trimmed down to 30 for each team after three days of trial on Sunday.

Twenty-five players were supposed to be finalised but the management decided to give the coaches more time in accessing the players further.

President Cup head coach Justin Ganai said he will need another two weeks before announcing the final list due to the quality of the players who turned up.

“I have decided to keep 30 players before naming the 25 players for registration in two weeks time.

“It was difficult for us to make the decision due to the quality of players especially as we are only allowed to register 25 players, but we have come to a conclusion to select the best in each of the positions.

“The training was suppose to start tomorrow (Monday) but we have to postpone to Wednesday, 3pm because some of the players needed to return to their respective kampungs,” he said.

Meanwhile, Youth Cup head coach Johnny Dominicus believed one week is enough for him to select the best players for this season’s competition set to start at the end of February.

“The selection over the last three days went smoothly. We have discovered a lot of hidden talents from other districts.

“Most of these players are recommended by coaches in their respective districts, with seven retained from last season’s squad.

“The players will take a day off and report to us on Tuesday. We must finalise the final squad within the week and hopefully we can assemble a strong line-up from the pool of players.

“Our target this year is to be able to improve our performance from previous seasons, and to at least make it to the quarterfinal stage,” he said after the end of the session at Likas Sukma field on Sunday morning.
