Dotting of lions eyes in Labuan
LABUAN: As the new lunar year approaches many Chinese are busy preparing for the dotting the lions eyes ceremony, an event that procedes the New Year celebrations.

The Peng Hunag Shan Da Xian Miao (Temple of 8 Immortal) at Raucha-Rancha here performed the ceremony Monday in an early start with six of the lions. Senior temple officials including an Advisory Council of Labuan Corporation Noor Halim Zaini were given the honour to “spiritualise” the lions.

An adviser of the temple Datuk Robert Seah said “the ceremony symbolises life-given to the lions, dotting the eye with a paint would ensure the lion could see, the mouth to enable it to eat and ears for it to hear.”

Lettuce is the favourite food of the lions, the vegetable is hung up in some premises with a red packet for the lion to swallow.

Lions dances are important components of the Chinese New Year, they help enliven the day and many welcome the lions to chase away the bad luck and welcome the new good spirit to their homes. Some rich families hang up angpows as much as RM2,000 or more but some RM20.00 but the lions are not choosy in their performances.
