KUCHING: Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg (pic) has urged the people not to be involved with the political tension in the peninsula.

Instead, he said, Sarawakians should remain focused on the state’s development.

“The Federal Government may have changed but we will continue to fight for our rights.

“While others are busy arguing on who would be the next prime minister, we will focus on the state’s development.

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government continued its momentum in managing the economy in line with the commitment and spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) when it posted record high state revenue of RM6.973 billion last year.

“What is important is that we ‘take care’ of our own ‘house’. We mustn’t get involved (with the political tension in the peninsula),” he said during the Sarawakku Sayang programme in Kota Samarahan here.

He said the State Government led by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is committed to develop the state based on its own mould.

Apart from the bountiful natural resources in Sarawak, leaders had strategised the state’s economy based on the state’s strengths, as well as their knowledge and experiences.

He said all these had reduced Sarawak’s dependency on the Federal Government.

“For example, we have taken over the Bakun dam which means the State Government had taken charge of power generation and supply statewide.

Besides that, he said, the State Government had also formed Petros and awarded the company licences for oil and gas exploration and production in the onshore areas in Sarawak based on the Oil and Mining Ordinance 1958.

Therefore, Sarawak, he said is heading towards the right direction in achieving its vision of becoming a developed state by 2030.

Abang Johari said in the past three years, Sarawak had managed to improve its economy and maintain its socio-cultural goals despite its racial and cultural diversity.

“In the past three years, we have drafted our economic policies towards a digital economy and our main focus is to develop the rural areas in the state,” he said.

He cited, as an example, the formation of the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) to improve the telco facilities in the rural areas by constructing telecommunication towers and providing 3G and 4G connectivity to the people.

He also urged the people to remain united to ensure a brighter future for Sarawak through its vision of becoming a developed state by 2030. – FMT
