35 died in Sabah fires last year

SANDAKAN: A total of 35 fire-related deaths were recorded in 2019 in Sabah which show an increase compared to the previous year.State Fire and Rescue Department Director, Kamarulzaman Malik Abdullah said his department is committed to reducing the number of deaths from fire this year.

“If we look at last year’s statistics, there was an increase in deaths so this year we are committed to reducing it.
“Therefore, there are several programmes that we have set up specifically for public education, such as community firefighting programmes, one-on-one campaigns as well as festive season campaigns.
“Soon we will be celebrating the Chinese New Year and we will conduct inspections at shopping centres, public places such as movie theatres, entertainment venues to ensure that there is no fire danger.
“We know that most of these deaths are from home or residential fire so our yearly security campaign will focus on home security campaigns,” he said during a Media Together Appreciation event organised by the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Zone 6 Department at its premises, Monday.

Kamarulzaman also said fire cadets in schools, community fire squads and volunteer firefighters would continue to intensify in support of its awareness campaign.

In another development, Kamarulzaman said the department is prepared to face any possible floods during the Kimanis by-election.

The Media Appreciation Night was also attended by Sandakan Fire Station 6 Zone Chief Anddre Andrew who will be moving to the Beaufort Fire Station.
