RM600mil border crossing needed, says Dept
TAWAU: Sabah Immigration director Muhammad Sade Mohamad Amin said it is necessary to build the proposed road connecting the border areas of Serudong (Malaysia)-Simanggaris (Indonesia) which included customs, immigration, quarantine and security (CIQS) as well as civil servant squatters to prevent illegal border crossing.

Sade said, the project valued at about RM600 million, as approved in the Budget 2020 by the Federal Government, is needed to put on action; so that, people from both countries can legally cross the border through immigration inspection.

He told reporters this at a dinner with the media at a restaurant here on Tuesday after his two-day study visit in Tawau and at the boundary of Malaysia-Indonesia on January 13-14.

“We are still looking for a suitable site for the construction although Indonesia has proposed a location equipped with available roads leading to the boundary point of A708-post between Malaysia and Indonesia.

“We will submit a report to the government as there will some technical matters that need to be resolved from several parties for the purpose of building the CIQS,” Sade explained.

It was learnt that the border areas of Serudong (Malaysia)-Simanggaris (Indonesia) is 40 km off road from Kalabakan and only assessable by four-wheel-drive (4WD).
