SANDAKAN: Taxpayers here are expected to take advantage of the Sandakan Municipal Council’s (MPS) Tax Amnesty Week from Jan 17-19.MPS President Wong Foo Tin said the programme provides the opportunity for taxpayers to enjoy discount incentives to settle their tax arrears.

“This programme held for the first time can ease their burden and at the same time encourage taxpayers to settle their arrears.
“It is also the initiative of the MPS to collect taxes as the tax arrears for the Sandakan are among the highest in Sabah.
“Through this tax amnesty, MPS will provide a 25 per cent discount for those who pay their arrears in lump sum and a 20 per cent discount for those settle in two payments.
“In addition, for those who are good paymaster for 10 consecutive years, they are eligible to participate in a lucky draw. This is how we appreciate their effort,” he said after officiating the MPS Tax Amnesty Week at Liberty Parade, Bandar Kim Fung, Friday.

He said MPS relied on tax collection which would be used for market maintenance, lawn mowing, landscape programmes, drainage, road maintenance, community programmes and to pay MPS’ staff salaries.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Commenting on the tax collection target during the three-day period, Wong said he was aiming for RM5 million.

“MPS also aims to raise RM10 million by March 31 and we will focus on arrears. Last year, only RM6 million was collected from the total tax arrears of RM37 million,” he added.
