KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Petronas Carigali head office building is nearing completion this year, next to its current Sabah HQ in Karamunsing that will be linked with a bridge structure building (pic).

It is the only dedicated office building project in the state capital for its own use, testifying to the great future prospects of deep-sea oil and gas exploration to the profitability of Petronas Group.

The project reflects the busy construction industry going into the new decade beyond 2020 which will see the completion of major building projects that will alter the landscape of the state capital, lowering the local unemployment level with more new launches of home construction.

Officially the project is approved as the extension of 11 storeys new office building complete with 2½   floors sub-basement car park for Petronas Carigali sdn Bhd on Land Title: Town Lease (TL) 017563248 at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah with the development plan approved on Nov 11, 2014 and the building plan approved on March 2, 2015.

It’s more than five years since that the building is still ongoing which is perceived at a slow pace of construction.

According to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, the national petroleum company is worth more than RM100 billion and offered shares to the Sabah and Sarawak governments to buy into ownership of Petronas.

However, the Sarawak government set up its own Petros oil and gas exploration company or Petroleum Sarawak Berhad for Sarawak and the previous Sabah government took over M3nergy Berhad as a state owned company held through Sabah Development Bank and now is renamed Sabah International Petroleum Sdn Bhd.

It will be interesting to see whether the finishing to the Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd’s 11-storey new office building will include large scale solar energy generation for the building.

Petronas is into renewable energy as seen in the SARAF 2019 in Sarawak where the company is promoting its M+Solar to give businesses that adopt its solar scheme products, three advantages: “Assuring Savings, Achieving Sustainability and Affirming Reliability.”

Before the Shell Plaza was completed as a Grade A Office building in the CBD, the Sabah Petronas HQ building is already deemed as the state capital Grade A-like Office building and touted as a green building.
