K’gau classmates meet 50 years later
KENINGAU: After almost 50 years of not seeing each other a first SFX Reunion Class of 1969-1974 by former St Francis Xavier Keningau students became a reality despite some unable to be present.

It was held at RMC Café Binaong and had a profound impact on the former students who studied from Primary Six in 1969 to Form Five in 1974.

Many were working outside the district which made keeping in touch difficult.

Except for those who still live in Keningau who often meet over coffee. All the former students contributed generously to make the occasion a success.

The initial planning for the event was in February, last year, by several students to track down former students across Sabah and Labuan through creating a Whatsapp group, Class of ‘69’ -’74’ (SFX) application. Some 59 former students were eventually traced.

Some have since become grandfathers and grandmothers. There were those who brought along family members.

Organising Chairman and Admins Whatsapp Group, Fred Toyong, started his speech with a moment of silence to respect classmates who were no longer with them .

“It was hard to believe that 50 years have passed since our Primary Six days 47 years.”

Recalling how the reunion came about, Fred said it was suggested by late classmate James Sorob who was still in contact through Whatsapp.

“I told him I will arrange it soon not knowing that he was not well at that time already. I came back to Keningau to get things going with the help of classmates staying in Keningau,” he said.

He thanked the hard working committee.

Some 45 classmates and their family members came from Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Tawau, Tambunan, Keningau and Labuan.

Several former students represented every class. among them were Philip Lee, Framcis Udong and others who gave short talks related their experience during school and staying at  school boarding.

Various events were also held like cutting the 50th Anniversary Reunion cake, entertainment, photo exhibition of their school days and enjoyment of dishes and drinks provided by the former students themselves.
