Sabah Scouts to ensure younger members respect environ
SANDAKAN: The Scouts Association of Malaysia, Sabah Branch will continue its efforts to ensure that the younger generation, especially young scouts, respect the environment.

National Scouts deputy chief commissioner-cum-Sabah scout commissioner, Datuk Awang Zaini Suntim said the association would also be conducting programmes that contribute to the conservation of endangered tree species and other related efforts.

“Seven years ago, our troop along with 15 representatives from Asia Pacific as well as fellow troops statewide and nationwide, had also done similar tree-planting activity in Sandakan,” he said.

He told the media after launching the Sibuga scouts environmental campaign at Scout Nature Park at Bandar Indah.

Also present were Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Research Centre Project Manager, Benny Tuzan, Sandakan divisional Scouting Chief Assistant Commissioner, Lawrence Tan Ken Yee, Sandakan divisional Scout Commissioner, Barmuli Parudin, Sandakan Zone 1 Scouting Commissioner, Mahyuddin Mansor, Special Zone Scouting Commissioner, Daim @ Deen Erwan Gunda and Sibuga Area Scout Commissioner, Mohd Sofiee Ag Basrih. About 200 students from seven schools within Sibuga that include MRSM Sandakan, SMK Elopura, SMK Perempuan Sandakan, SK Nunuyan Laut, SK Ladang Sandak, Sungai Batang and SMK St Michael, Sandakan participated in the two-day programme.  In addition, some 300 trees and a variety of forest-type plants from endemic, rare and endangered species were planted during the event.

The main goal of the Sibuga scouting area in collaboration with the Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Research Centre, among others, was to support efforts to establish a scouting centre of excellence for nature and the environment.

It also provided exposure to endangered forest species and raise awareness on forest restoration and conservation.

Zaini expressed hoped the event achieved its goals so that future generations could see for themselves what kind of trees they have and efforts to ensure they are not threatened in the future.
