'Papagomo fracas-like incidents must not repeat'
KOTA KINABALU: Police must take stern action against those who caused a fracas at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport on Sunday night and ensure such shameful incidents at our international gateway to Sabah will not be repeated.

SAPP President Datuk Yong Teck Lee said the confrontation and shouting match between two groups  was tantamount to riotous behaviour.

“Such threatening behaviour is unprecedented in our airport and is completely alien to Sabah’s harmonious and peaceful culture.

“The incident has casted a bad image for Sabah because there were other innocent bystanders, including the elderly, children and tourists. The Malaysia Airport authorities and the security services must also take stock of what had happened and make sure that there will be no repeat.

“Last night’s incident constitutes offences such as disturbing of the peace, disorderly conduct in a public area, obstruction of duties of police officers and criminal assaults. It does not matter which group was wrong or right.

“All the culprits must face the law or else there will be a breakdown in confidence towards the security services.

“Therefore, the Deputy Home Minister (from Sabah), the Sabah Chief Minster cum Security Committee Chairman and the Sabah Tourism Minister and the Sabah Commissioner of Police all have a duty to make sure that stern actions are taken against these rioters as a lesson to prevent a recurrence,” said Yong in a statement.

He added that it was normal in politics to disagree with each other but it was not acceptable to behave violently towards one’s political opponents. At the same time, tearing up the poster of any candidate or political party was also wrong.
