Rat droppings, so Labuan mart fined
LABUAN: A renowned supermarket here was fined RM2,500 for failing to maintain the quality and cleanliness of its retailed products.

Labuan Health Director Dr Ismuni disclosed that the supermarket located at Financial Park Complex was found displaying products on shelves contaminated with traces of rat droppings.

“We found many packets of flour riddled with holes due to rat bites and the shelves where the good were displayed reeked of urine and were littered with rat droppings,” he said, adding that it had been warned before.

He said the retailer was compounded under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985 and all contaminated products were seized.

Dr. Ismuni spoke to reporters after leading an integrated operation in collaboration with the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Department and Labuan Corporation (LC) to inspect the compliance with Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985 at local supermarkets here on Tuesday.

He revealed that expired and dented products which are not safe for consumption were also seized.

During the operation, four premises were inspected including supermarkets at Sungai Bedaun, Patau-Patau, and Kampung Layangan.

Dr Ismuni added that among other common offences were labeling faults including not providing the importers address and not translating label contents of imported goods to English or Malay from foreign languages
