Sandakan Water Dept cuts off 10 illegal water connections

SANDAKAN: The district Water Department cut off 10 illegal pipe connections in several squatter areas on Tuesday.
The department’s engineer Ishar Hamka Ismail said they were informed of water thefts in a squatter area around Jalan Batu Sapi on Jan 21.

“After investigating with the help of [water engineering company] in the area, we found four illegal direct connections around the edge of Kampung Di Sayang,” he said.
“In addition, four illegal connections were detected by the Water Department which were directly connected to the main pipeline along the road at the Kampung Lupak Meluas area and two illegal connections at Kg Bakau.”
All the illegal connections were believed to have been made to nearby squatter colonies by irresponsible people.
During the operation, several poly-pipes of various sizes and clamps were seized and taken to the department’s office for further action.

The 10 illegal connections were taken out by the Water Department in an operation from 8.30am to 12:30 pm with the help of a contractor.
The offences are punishable under Section 49(b) and Section 53 of the Sabah State Water Supply Enactment 2003 by up to RM 50,000 in fines or two years’ imprisonment.

The Water Department urged all residents to comply with the enactment or face severe punishment if found guilty.
The department also asked the public to alert them of thefts or leakages by contacting their hotline at 1-300-8888-55.
