Drop in Ranau road tragedies
RANAU: The ongoing efforts of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to minimise the rate of accidents and fatalities among road users in the area had been successful as statistics show a decline in cases for 2019 compared to 2018.

Ranau District Police Chief DSP Sammy Newton said the Ranau Police Headquarters (IPD) statistics in 2018 recorded 19 cases where three cases are fatal while the rest are cases involving normal accidents and damages only.

“For 2019 statistics, accidents decreased by six cases in total with only 13 cases and no fatal accidents occurred.

Although statistics show the number of cases decreased, awareness on the importance of road safety still needs to be increased,” he told the media after the launch of the “Op Selamat 16/2020 Ranau District Level”, recently.

DSP Sammy also reminded road users to be careful when driving in four hotspots or accident-prone areas in the district.

The four hotspots or areas identified for frequent life-threatening accidents, namely KM1-30 of the Ranau-Telupid road, KM1-22 (Ranau-Tamparuli), KM1-7 (Ranau-Tambunan) and KM6 (Ranau-Kota Marudu) near Kg Bongkud.

“These are accidents that are prone to happen in those areas and we ask road users to be careful, especially during the festive seasons and school holidays.

“In conjunction with school and Chinese New Year holidays, the number of vehicles passing through the Ranau district increased compared to normal days.

“I urge all road users to practice prudent driving, plan trips, avoid driving in a hurry and to ensure that the vehicle is maintained and in good condition before commencing,” he said.

He also advised drivers to avoid mistakes such as driving over speed limits, using a mobile phone while driving, cutting in hazardous manners, and drink-driving among others.

“Regular enforcement and patrols in the blackspot area and security campaigns are still underway this year as it has shown the effectiveness of reducing road accidents in Ranau,” he said.

He also reminded the public to fill out the Borang Maklumat Balik Kampung that was uploaded on the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) app in the ‘App Store’ and ‘Google Play Store’, for the purpose of curbing crime while returning to the village.

“This form is also available at the nearest stations. Take advantage of this facility to help police execute patrols at residential areas as well as premises especially during festivals,” he added.

Earlier in the programme, DSP Sammy along with Ranau police officers and IPD police had distributed 30 “goodies” to road users, reminding them to be careful and obey the traffic rules.
