Kota Kinabalu: Some 500 youths and aspiring entrepreneurs will be aided in their ventures into business through the ‘Ooze Young Entrepreneur Program’, starting June this year.

Supported by the State Youth and Sports Ministry, the programme is run by four private organisations, namely Ooze, Morefun, Borneo Startup Community (BosCo) and Onexox, where resources from all parties will be consolidated to run the initiative.

State Youth and Sports Ministry Phoong Jin Zhe said, the objective of the programme is to start the youth young on entrepreneurship and create more job opportunities.

“The State Government has been very encouraging of youth entrepreneurship. We will get those between 13 to 21 years old to join this programme. “So under my ministry, there is a programme which was previously called the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme Sabah (Yess), basically it’s a cash grant to eligible youths.

“But now we have rebranded Yess into a new programme, called the Youth Entrepreneurship Aspiration Program (Yeap). So instead of only giving out grants, we also collaborate with different organisations and agencies to consolidate all resources. “The winners will get the grant and assistance from my ministry as well. Basically the idea is we hope more young entrepreneurs will emerge. If you are interested in entrepreneurship, you can seek all of us and we will try our best to assist,”

He told a press conference after witnessing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) exchange between Ooze, Morefun, BosCo and Onexox, at the Morefun Corporate Office, here, Friday.

“We know this will create more job opportunities and a better economy for all. So we encourage and send a message to all the young people out there to be courageous and brave to enter into business,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ooze founder Precilla Fong said the programme will run for three months and will be divided into three parts.

“The first part is the sales challenge, where we will teach students about digital marketing and also traditional marketing, so they can compare what is trending with sales today compared to the traditional way.

“The second part is the mentorship session which will be conducted by BosCo. They are actually an agency that collaborates with the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Center (MaGIC). They will have resources for our students, and teach about the design thinking module which leads students to identify problems around us and see problem-solving as a business opportunity.

“The third part is the pitching session where students will pitch their business ideas. Successful local entrepreneurs will also be invited to share their experience. For the pitching we have judges from MaGIC and they will select the winners of the whole three-month program,” she said. Precilla added that the programme will target 25 schools. “We are looking at 20 students per school. Not only secondary schools but also colleges and universities,” she said.
