LABUAN: Three compounds and fourteen warning notices were issued by the Labuan Corporation (LC) against traders here for not complying with the use of biodegradable products.
Federal Territories Ministry Strategic Development Division Secretary Lokman Jaaman said inspections at 34 business premises also saw warning notices being issued to traders who did not comply with the ban on plastic straws.

He said that the three compounds were issued to retailers who failed to comply with the use of biodegradable plastic bags despite previous warnings.
“Based on our inspection today, we found that majority of operators here are in full compliance with the ban on the use of plastic drinking straws.
“As the ban was newly-imposed, we will only issue warning notices as a reminder to those who have not complied with the ban, as it is the ministry’s friendly approach of educating the operators to slowly abide by the rules,” he told reporters, Thursday, after the integrated compliance inspection.
Lokman noted that awareness campaigns on the negative effects of using the conventional plastic straws had also been held throughout 2019 until the ban was enforced beginning early this year.

He reminded that only straws made from biodegradable material (as recommended and approved by the local authorities) or paper could be used instead of the conventional plastic straws.
Lokman reminded those who are still found to have not complied with the ban are liable to a compound of RM300.
