Labuan fishermen receive fish traps
LABUAN: Some 15 fishermen from the island received new hybrid fish traps (bubu ikan) from Labuan Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) here on Sunday, to accelerate coastal fishing activities.

Labuan Bersatu Division Chief Datuk Suhaili Abd Rahman said the aid will assist local coastal fishermen in increasing their income with a new and improved fish trap designed by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The pilot project by the University introduces a new design which allows more fish to be caught in a single cast.

“The aid will help improve the lives of Labuan people especially those involved in the fisheries sector in the coastal areas,” he said.

Suhaili spoke to reporters after the handing-over of the fish traps by Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Dr Shahruddin Md Salleh at Kampung Sungai Labu community hall here.

Suhaili added that Labuan Bersatu had lined up several other programmes aimed to improve the livelihood of the local community throughout the year.

“The presentation of fish traps is one of the many initiatives we have planned to improve the people’s standard of living here,” he said.

More than 400 Labuan residents attended the event including local community leaders.
