SANDAKAN: Two more pygmy elephants were found dead in Sentosa Plantation, Sukau on Saturday and Tangkulap Plantation bordering the Deramarkot Forest Reserve, near here, Monday.

Sabah Wildlife Director Augustine Tugaa said no external wounds were found on the carcasses but initial investigation is still ongoing to determine whether poaching or poisoning played a hand in the latest deaths involving adult females.

A team had gone to both discovery sites and conducted a postmortem on the Sukau carcass and is conducting another on the carcass in Tangkulap as of press time on Monday.

Tuuga also said Wildlife has not been able to establish the cause of fatal elephant poisoning cases after many incidents and tests, saying chemical analyses are not conclusive and that the department will look for other expert laboratories to do their investigations.

Last year, at least 25 pygmy elephants were found dead due to nature or poachers. Another carcass was found in January.
