RM31,200 worth of contraband cigarettes seized in Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU: Some RM31,200 worth of contraband cigarettes inside a Proton Waja were seized while a 45-year-old man was detained at Kampung Sabah Baru, Jalan Tengah Nipah, Tuesday.
District Police Chief, ACP Nasri Mansor said police and the Tiger Platoon Unit were carrying intelligence at the area when they spotted a White Proton Waja at about 10.30pm.

Nasri said the team approached the vehicle but a man inisde the car dashed out of the car and fled towards the village areas.
He said the team inspected the village to trace down the suspect but the efforts were in vain due to darkness.
“The team later inspect the Waja and found a man at the front passenger seat. The team also found several plastic packages containing cigarettes with unpaid taxes inside the car’s bonnet and its rear seat.
“The suspect and the seizure including the car were taken to Lahad Datu Police Headquarters for further action,” he said.

Nasri said investigations found that the contraband was brought here from Tawau and the individual who fled the scene was believed to be a friend of the suspect.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.
