Zaini is new Sabah police chief

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Zaini Jass has been appointed the new Sabah Police Commissioner, effective Thursday.

The former State Deputy Police Commissioner takes over from Datuk Omar Mammah who will be going on mandatory retirement today (Friday).

The handing-over of duties ceremony between Zaini and Omar was held at the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters, witnessed by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Mazlan Mansor, here, Thursday.

Zaini, 57, in his speech after signing the hand-over certificate, thanked the department for entrusting him with the post.

“I promise to carry out my duty fully to fulfil the trust given and will never disappoint the wisdom that has been placed on me to drive the Sabah PDRM,” he said.

Expressing gratitude to Omar for providing guidance and encouragement, he said the past one-and-half year has been a very valuable experience and lesson for him.

“I will direct and maintain the integrity of the Sabah PDRM in preventing any elements such as threatening the harmony in the State as well as to prevent crime for the safety and welfare of the people.

“I will also continue the existing policies that are effective and formulate new initiatives to reduce fear of crime among the community,” he said.

Meanwhile, Omar, in his speech, said during his 31 years of service beginning on Dec 17, 1989, he devoted his entire life to the team for his homeland and numerous obstacles were faced throughout his journey.

“Man jadda, wa jadda which means those who work hard will succeed, so with all the grace, I was able to withstand all of the challenges.

“All the memories and achievements of serving as a leader in the field of prayer will never be forgotten.

“I’m very satisfied with the teamwork culture that is implemented and practised in each assignment plus the bravery of officers and personnel who are willing to take on various risks that have yielded impressive results with some significant success for the field during 2018 to early 2020,” he said.

Zaini’s place will be filled by PDRM Secretary Datuk Mazli Mazlan.
