GOF personnel who died truly dedicated
SANDAKAN: The late Corporal Asman Ongkal who drowned while trying to rescue students following a boat collision early Thursday was described by his superior as an excellent personnel dedicated to his work. “His act of rescuing others when their boat capsized is more than appreciated,” said General Operations Force’s Battalion 15 commanding officer, Supt Toipi Lamat.

“Despite being in such situation, he (Asman) went all out to rescue the students involved,” he said. He said Asman was able to maintain his composure and made every effort to dive in to rescue those trapped under the boat canopy before getting them onto public boats which came to assist,” he said.

“He has a strong physique and was involved in the Tandou operation. He was formerly in the Tiger Platoon 3 of the General Operations Force and most recently returned to the General Operations Force’s Company C here,” he added.

He said Asman had a friendly character and got on well with his colleagues. Asman was on his way to work at 7am on Thursday. He left his house in Tanjung Aru together with his son and they both boarded a boat headed for the mainland where his son went to school.
