Lajim: Dept must resolve Beaufort’s water woes
BEAUFORT: There is no reason for the water problem here not to be resolved if the Kampung Lawa water plant can supply water to Labuan, said former Beaufort MP Datuk Lajim Ukin.

“Why don’t the Water Department apply the same technique as the water plant in Kampung Lawa is able to provide water supply for the whole of Labuan,” he said during a peaceful rally on the water problem at the sports complex, here, Saturday.

He also said the best solution to the perennial problem is the installation of another water plant near the old hospital to replace the plants at Mile 58 and Mile 60.

“Millions of ringgit had been allocated by the previous government to rectify this problem, but instead it still persists until today.

“I am not pointing my finger at anybody but the Water Department should be more responsible instead of blaming the previous government as it had allocated some RM230 million for the setting up of a new plant.”

The Water Department, he said, should be more proactive to settle the matter.

“They should provide sufficient supply by using water lorries in the affected villages, instead of giving unreasonable excuses.

“The Department should report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission if they found any corrupt contractors.

“And if the Department is still unable to settle this issue, then the residents here can bring this matter to court to seek compensation,” he said.

Lajim claimed, in some cases, the Department said they cannot provide water supply to affected consumers as they do not have an allocation for fuel.

Recently, Beaufort MP Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun, Klias Assemblyman Datuk Isnin Aliasnih, Lumadan Assemblyman Matbali Musah, State Water Department Director Datuk Amarjit Singh and several other government officials held a dialogue regarding the water problem in the district.

“The dialogue session was good but the excuses given by the Water Department are ridiculous.

“The Department must find an approach to tackle this issue immediately.

“Such rally will be held again in future as long as the water problem persists,” he said.

The one-hour peaceful rally was attended by about 200 people and about 1,500 signatures were obtained for a petition to be submitted to the Chief Minister, Infrastructure Development Minister and the State Water Department Director.
