LABUAN: Labuan Port Authority (LPA) announced the appointment of Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd as the new operator of Labuan Liberty Port for a six-year term, thus ending the services of Labuan Liberty Port Management Sdn Bhd (LLPM) which was the operator the past 22 years (1998).
LPA, in a notice issued on Feb 13 to the shipping community and others, said the new operator would commence April 1, and highlighted two points in the notice, namely:

l On Jan 26, 2017, by virtue of an order of the Bintulu Port Authority (BPA) (Extension of Function) 2017, BPA extended its functions to regulate the port activities of Liberty Wharf Labuan under the style of LPA.
l The Labuan Port Authority has appointed Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd to manage and operate port activities at Liberty Wharf and its premises. LPA remains the regulatory body of the Liberty Wharf and the port areas within its limit.
The Labuan Liberty Port berths have a total length of 3,556 metres and alongside depths of 4.6 to 10 metres, and could accommodate vessels of 16,000 deadweight tonnage.
It was reported on Jan 22 that Straits Inter Logistics Bhd (SIL) had received a Letter of Award from BPA to operate and manage Labuan Terminal for six years. The relationship between SIL and Megah Management is not clear at this point.

Last year, BPA cancelled a Request for Proposal (RFP) to operate the Labuan Port and some 32 companies were said to have bided, including LLPM.
When it was reported last December that a KL-based company had been successful in the bid, LLPM was dissatisfied and lodged reports of alleged tender conspiracy and leaked information to Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

However, LPA Chairman Chan Fong Hin dismissed the allegations as without basis.

In the same month, Malaysian Ship Owners Association Chairman Datuk Abdul Malek Hak said the Labuan Port review was timely as the port has been operated without official tariff since 1998. He added that the facilities at the port also needed to be upgraded.
