Biosphere centre planned for Kiulu
TUARAN: Kiulu is among the fastest rural tourism growing areas here will have a Biosphere Reserve Centre for Environmental Education and Tourist Information soon.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau (pic) said the centre would simultaneously enable easy access to education regarding environmental care and awareness.

“In addition, the people of Kiulu will have the opportunity to develop their socio-economy through the eco-tourism industry.

“I fully support the programme as a conservation measure and will seek the cooperation of the authorities to build this facility,” he said when met in conjunction with the Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve (RBBC) Briefing and Exhibition at Kiulu Community Hall.

The Tuaran MP said the district’s rich natural resources such as its rivers, waterfalls as well as flora and fauna, yields potential in becoming a tourist attraction or a destination for extreme activities.

“However, it is important to remind all parties, especially tourism operators, to use renewable or sustainable methods while also avoiding unwanted incidents,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sabah Parks Deputy Director Daring Laban said the programme aims to encourage the community in supporting the State division RBBC Community Day to be held at Sabah Cultural Centre on June 11-12.

He said that there are 686 Biosphere Reserves in 122 countries, adding that Malaysia has two of such facility namely Tasik Chini in Pahang and Crocker Range.

“RBBC is comprised of nine areas namely Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Tuaran, Papar, Beaufort, Tenom, Keningau, Tambunan and Ranau.

“I hope that we will all work together to ensure that the Crocker Range biosphere reserve here is well protected,” he said.
