Substation problem causes longer blackouts
SABAH Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) was experiencing problems with the Ring Main Unit (RMU) inside the substation in Lintas Square, Luyang, which resulted in a prolonged blackout in that commercial centre on Feb 11.

“We noticed the switch gear inside the substation was not functioning as it should, and this was what triggered the blackouts in that area on several occasions,” said a SESB spokeswoman, when contacted recently. She said the RMU is a totally sealed, gas-insulated compact switchgear unit which can be found inside every substation. “Dealing with this unit is a laborious task especially when the substation is supplying high voltage of electricity,” she added. She said the maintenance work was only completed later that evening. A concerned office worker was baffled as to why the commercial centre was without power supply for several hours despite the presence of several mobile generator trucks there. “The ceiling lights, computers and the air-conditioner units suddenly shut off while we were working in the office around 9am,” said JOAN, who spoke on behalf of her superiors and colleagues. Asked whether they were issued a notice prior to the disruption, she replied no. “We were told by their Careline’s representative at 1-5454 that it was an emergency shut down to facilitate some crucial repairs to their supply equipment,” she added. She, however, was puzzled as to why the supply was still not restored despite the fact that three mobile generator trucks were stationed at the commercial centre’s substation for several hours on that day. “I thought the generators were supposed to offset the situation by supplying temporary supply to this area while they were working on the problems,” she added. She bemoaned the prolonged blackout on that weekday as many work deadlines were forced to be postponed.  “We had no choice but to leave the office early than usual because of that,” she added.  (OV)
