Kota Kinabalu: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through its Science and Natural Resources Faculty (FSSA) will carry out a mini water treatment plant project at Kg Mengkapon in Pitas.

Project Head Prof Dr Kawi Bidin said the project would take about one year to complete.

“It combines UMS FSSA’s expertise in various fields including hydrology, geology, design, water quality and electronics and automation,” he said in a statement.

The project, which was awarded by the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (Mestecc) to Sabah Baitulmal Corporation, is to be carried out with the help of UMS FSSA expertise via the Malaysian Social Innovation (MySI) grant.

Dr Kawi said the community-based Tagal system here has put him and the rest of the team to be optimistic to ensure the success of the mini-water treatment plant project.

“Without the involvement and cooperation of all parties, this project would not have been possible,” he said.

Earlier, Dean of FSSA UMS, Prof Dr Baba Musta carried out a groundbreaking and landmark ceremony of the project in the village.

He thanked Mestecc for the Ministry’s concern over the problems faced by the villagers.

“I am also proud that Baitulmal Sabah has entrusted UMS especially FSSA for this project.

“We will make sure that the project will be implemented successfully,” he said.

At the event, UMS staff, Bernas, UMS alumni and individuals distributed kitchen necessities to the villagers.
