SM St Michael wins second runner-up at national-level convention
PENAMPANG: The national PROTUNe Convention 2019 (Konvensyen Program Tunas Niaga Peringkat Nasional 2019) saw the team from SM St Michael Penampang accomplishing yet another accolade.

Led by the school’s principal, Jennifer Asing, and teacher advisor, Mariatul Hanis Abdullah, the team once again won several prizes during the convention held from Feb 13 to Feb 16 at the Ilmu Pauh Putra Hall, University Perlis Malaysia (Unimap), Perlis.

A team of 10 students from St Michael brought home two prizes.

The students involved were Annathalia Sandy Anthony, Christian Bryan Johniu, Dave Ernest Domanic, Reanne Richelle R. Munang, Phoebe Alyson Wong, Cherilyn Ameera Rafizy, Nigel Paul Laujang, Amanda Sunindai Amadeus, Natalie Charissa Cheong and Grace Sheera Chau.

The competition was participated by eight states where SM St Michael managed to obtain second runner-up for Best Creative Product and Best Presentation.

Jennifer said the product that won them second runner up was Hanabira tiles, which is organic waste-based tiles using organic material such as eggshell, saga seed and corn seed as part of the component.

“In the modern era today, organic wastes are increasing in volume and some of them are harmful substance such as plastic.  This cause the amount of landfills to increase and causing climate change.  Therefore, to solve the issue we decided to improvise an invention called Hanabira Tiles. Hanabira in Japanese means petals.

“This in a way will help to sustain our planet earth,” she said.

Meanwhile, two other schools representing Sabah in the competition were SMK Sepagaya, Lahad Datu and SMK Paris, Kinabatangan.

Zulkifli Jaya from SMK Sepagaya, was awarded the Best Teacher Advisor.

“It is a good experience and beneficial exposure to our students to have represented Sabah in this convention.

To have won the prizes was a bonus. It taught the students’ entrepreneur skills, enhances critical thinking and promotes leadership in solving problems.

The convention allowed the students to explore their interest in entrepreneurship and boost their confidence especially during the presentation of their report and products,” said Jennifer.

She also thanked some people who assisted them and for their guidance and support prior and throughout the convention namely Siti Roszariah Awang of Sedco, Mohd Amir Karim (General Manager of Sedcovest), Nor Jahan Yaakub and Mohd Hasrul Ag Tuah of Sedcovest, Ramlah Ramli  (Sabah Education Department), Board of Governor, PTA of SM St Michael, parents, teachers, non-teaching staff and other students of the school.
