Only 200 Chinese tourists granted 7-day visa extension
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Immigration Department has issued only 200 special passes (for one- week visa extension) as of Feb 23 to Chinese tourists in the State who have applied for it.

State Immigration Department Director Datuk Dr Muhamad Sade Mohamad Amin said the number was out of 1,000 Chinese visitors who are still in Sabah.

“The rest (800) are those who still have a valid visa period and are allowed to continue to spend their holiday here.

“However, I believe that by the end of this month, the number of Chinese visitors in Sabah will be much reduced, maybe even to zero, as none is arriving and all have to leave (once their visa period is over),” he said.

Sade said this to reporters when met after paying a courtesy call on Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal at his office at Wisma PKNS, here, Monday.

According to Sade, there are still 4,821 Chinese nationals in Sabah who have long-term passes such as expatriates, student passes, workers and others, adding that as of January this year, the number of long-term pass holders has increased by 264 people.

He said his statement did not contradict the figures released by the Chinese Consulate-General’s Office here as the numbers involved various types of passes issued to Chinese nationals.

Earlier, Sade said the purpose of the visit was to meet the Chief Minister to introduce himself as the new Sabah Immigration Department Director and forge close ties between the department and the State Government.
